
Today’s post is the last in this series as the time comes to pause and contemplate my next move forward in my exploration of inter-relations between music and image. As accompanying music I have selected a track from McLaughlin and Santana’s collaboration album, “Love Devotion Surrender” from a period in the 70s when both were deeply involved in Indian philosophy, especially that of Sri Chinmoy. To reflect this I deliberately chose the sort of colours that are much used in Indian art etc. but seem so jarring to my western eye. At first sight the image appears symmetrical (and structurally it is) but on closer inspection the viewer can see that the colours are not symmetrical left to right. This required a fairly complex blend of three different images and reflects also the “near” symmetry of the two guitarist’s similar styles (on this album at least). In fact, for anybody acquainted with the styles of McLaughlin and Santana identifying who is playing what as they trade lightning licks is relatively easy…
