Cultural Bias

“Art is possible without artistic intention and can be better without it.”

Hiroshi Sugimoto

African artefacts of questionable authenticity. In them there is probably little artistic intention but how would we know anyway. To a European sensibility if the look is African then that is often enough - at least for the tourist market.

These deliberately dark and murky images speak to me of childhood memories of the Dark Continent - Heart of Darkness, even. As Africa emerges from a dark past into a seemingly still dark future perhaps all is darkness anyway.

Colourful Africa, exuberant Africa may yet exist in reality only not in my memory. Received memories, at that.

I have never actually been to Africa.
